For this project, we were tasked to make a plate or bowl out of glass. Our final design could be as complex as we wanted it to and could be square, triangle, circle, etc. I chose to design a simple plate with a slight curve. At first, I wanted to do a floral design but after doing some exploration, I decided to capture the essence from the elegant brand Burberry.
Process:
Our first task for this project was to pick our design. From there, we had to make our template on Adobe Illustrator. We then printed out the template and cut out each piece and laid them over the glass to cut the correct sized pieces. Cutting the glass brought along a lot of learning curves and techniques I never knew about. Since we were going to fuse or glass pieces together by being fired in a furnace, we also had to make a mold for our glass to sit on. I designed my mold in Solidworks and brought that onto a new program called Vetric Aspire which we use for the Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine. After the CNC cut out our mold from foam, we used that to pour plaster in so we could get out final mold. All that was left was to put our glass piece over our mold, put them both in the furnace wait for our final plate to come out.
